I like fat ducks and no fat duck collection would be complete without some Exhibition Rouens. When I ordered my first eggs, I hatched some very very inbred ducks. They had bad feathers, strange ways of walking, and were over all in a bad state. I decided to outcross them to hatchery Rouen's, and then breed back to type. The first birds I got were so inbred I would not even have thought to hatch their eggs. I outcrossed them as planned, bred them back, and ended up with a lovely flock of big fat exhibition rowens.
People think you can breed animals back to themselves, over and over again, and it will work out. Well, it does until it does not. All of our fun birds were imported from somewhere else, usually in small numbers. And then people inbred them and inbred them, and suddenly they have sick looking birds that do not lay eggs or have produce eggs that hatch. Outcrossing, when you are dealing with a very small gene pool, is the way to go.
I have seen some piss poor flocks with people boasting, "my birds are pure this or pure that"..... and Im like... have you seen your birds? They look like hell they are so inbred. Not me, I believe in outcrossing. Especially since most breeds in this country were started with a dozen ducks 150 years ago.
So, I have healthy Rouen's, so heavy they have to drag themselves around. But, they lay a lot of eggs and I have great fertility.
I am taking reservations for hatching eggs starting January 1. Reserve early to make sure you get the eggs you want. You can send me an email or buy them on ebay. If you live locally, or close enough to drive, I will be happy to hatch ducklings for you.
